Ordinary Seafarer (Deck) Course

Course Description: As a first step to become an ‘Able Seafarer Deck’ you first need to qualify as an ‘Ordinary Seafarer Deck’. This qualification will teach you the general skills covering Deck Lookout Duties, Different Vessels and their parts, Rope Skills & knots, Wire Skills and General Maintenance (corrosion, painting etc). Safe Work Procedures, Safe Access, Personal Protective Equipment and much more are covered, ensuring you are skilled to perform the duties of an ‘Ordinary Seafarer Deck’.

Duration: 10 Days

Entry Requirements: Seaman’s Book, Medical Certificate, Valid Eye-Test, Training Record Book, Ancillary Courses and Applicable Sea Service.

Learning Objectives: The SAMSA matrix prescribes that the learner should have the following knowledge and practical skills at the end of the course:

  • Occupational Health and Safety
  • Ship’s parts, functions and terms
  • Emergency procedures
  • Anchors and cables
  • Marine pollution
  • Derricks and cranes
  • Navigational watch
  • Principles of cargo handling and stowage
  • Ropes and its usage, Bends and Hitches

Additional Requirements: We include a light lunch with this course.

Accreditation: SAMSA application in progress.
