Hazardous Substances Course – Safety with Chemical Materials

Course Description: Both shore and seagoing personnel are faced with an enormous amount of chemical substances used in the normal operation of a seagoing vessel, or at a factory. The ‘Hazardous Substances’ Course deals with specific Safe Working Procedures to ensure that work is done to the highest safety standard. We also discuss control and containment measures and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).

Learning Objectives: International benchmarks indicate that the learner should have the following knowledge and practical skills at the end of the course:
- Function within and assigned role in the Incident Command System
- Know how to select and use proper specialized chemical personal protective equipment provided to the hazardous materials technician
- Understand hazard and risk assessment techniques
- Perform advanced control, containment and/or confinement operations within the capabilities of the resources and personal protective equipment available with the unit
- Understand and implement decontamination procedures
- Understand terminations procedures
- Understand basic chemical and toxicological terminology and behaviour
Additional Requirements: Learners will be required to annually refresh training with sufficient content and duration to maintain their competencies.
