Maritime Lookout and Watch Keeping Duties

Course Description: On-board shipping vessels we use in-experienced crew to perform lookout duties, and to assist the Officer of the watch. During this course we discuss the brief layout of the Collision Regulations and the specific duties of a lookout. The course is focused on the Officers to ensure that they fulfil a proper watch at sea, at anchor, and in port, and we discuss their specific duties as laid out in the Safe Manning Regulations.

Learning Objectives: The SAMSA matrix prescribes that the learner should have the following knowledge and practical skills at the end of the course:
- Identify current security threats and patterns
- Recognise and detect dangerous substances and devices
- Recognise characteristics and behavioural patterns of persons who are likely to threaten security
- Apply techniques used to circumvent security measures
- Apply crowd management and control techniques
- Effect security-related communications
- Know emergency procedures and contingency plans
- Operate security equipment and systems
- Test, calibrate, and maintain security equipment and systems, both ashore and at sea
- Inspect, control, and monitor on board activities
- Interpret relevant provisions of the Vessel/Facility Security Plan (FSP)
- Apply methods of physical screening of persons, personal effects, baggage, cargo, and vessel stores
- Understand and manage fatique
