Introduction to Medical Fisrt Aid Course (STCW A-VI/1-2)

Course Description: This course replaces the old First Aid at Sea course. The fundamental basics of this medical training course is to teach the learner how to effectively attend to injured crew members at your place of work or on-board your vessel(s). Learners are taught how to do the ‘primary survey’ and how to administer first aid treatments accordingly. Learners will have to demonstrate competency in CPR, Splinting, Wound Dressing, Control Bleeding and a host of additional ‘Basic First Aid Measures needed to perform the duties of the first response person in a medical emergency.

Duration: 4 Days

Entry Requirements: None

Learning Objectives: The Department of Labour prescribes that the learner should have the following knowledge and practical skills at the end of the course:

  • Personal safety
  • Probable causes of injuries
  • Standards of care
  • First aid practices
  • Treatment of patients
  • Stabilizing patient
  • Preparing patients for transport
  • Medical reports
  • Treatment
  • Symptoms
  • Signs of general medical emergencies
  • Pharmacology

Additional Requirements: None

Accreditation: Accreditation through SAMSA. STCW 78 as amended in 2010 with the Manila amendments. Certificate should be renewed every 5 years.
