Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities Course –
STCW A-VI/1-4 (STA-06-104)

Course Description: This course covers Social behaviour and safety procedures for accident prevention, and familiarizes novices with the employment conditions and working environment on board vessels. Vessels are small platforms with people from varying backgrounds cramped into one space. Learners need to be taught how to behave, and how to deal with different scenarios found onboard modern ships, oil rigs and the like.

Learning Objectives: The SAMSA matrix prescribes that the learner should have the following knowledge and practical skills at the end of the course:
- Understand types of Emergencies and actions to take
- Recognize emergency signals in station bill and use of safety equipment
- Know the values of drills and training
- Understand importance of working safe
- Use appropriate escape routes
- Understand effective communication
- Understand importance of precautions prior to entering a confined space
- Recognize when to use Lock-Out/Tag-Out
- Recognize duties regarding pollution prevention
- Understand policies regarding drug and alcohol abuse
- Know the importance of maintaining appropriate employee relations
- Understand and take necessary actions to control fatigue
Additional Requirements: Bring a change of old clothes and shoes, with a towel.
Accreditation: Accreditation through SAMSA. STCW 78 as amended in 2010 with the Manila amendments. Certificate should be renewed every 5 years.
