Personal Survival Techniques Course – STCW A–VI/1-1 (STA-06-101)

Course Description: This Personal Survival Techniques course replaces the old Proficiency in Life Rafts (PLR) course. We teach learners survival skills when in the water and how to safely jump from height into water. We focus on life rafts, teaching everything from deployment of life rafts to procedures to follow when inside one. Learners are also taught the various distress signals and aids to locating someone lost at sea. The Personal Survival Techniques course provides the learner with the best possible chance to survive at sea.

Duration: 2 Days

Entry Requirements: None

Learning Objectives: The SAMSA matrix prescribes that the learner should have the following knowledge and practical skills at the end of the course:

  • Describe emergencies at sea and survival principles
  • Demonstrate the use of life-saving appliances
  • Demonstrate Life Raft boarding activates

Additional Requirements: Bring a change of old clothes and shoes, with a towel.

Accreditation: Accreditation through SAMSA. STCW 78 as amended in 2010 with the Manila amendments. Certificate should be renewed every 5 years.
