Short Range Certificates Course

Course Description: The Short Range Certificate (SRC) course is the new VHF Operators Certificate. Radio Operators are taught the proper procedures to follow in an emergency, and the course curriculum covers, Mayday, Mayday Relay, Security, Urgency,safety Frequencies, Batteries, tests. Learners are also taught to tune, maintain and operate VHF radio equipment. The Short Range Radio Certificate also includes the new modules for Digital Selective Calling (DSC).

Learning Objectives: The SAMSA matrix prescribes that the learner should have the following knowledge and practical skills at the end of the course, identify and apply:
- General knowledge of radio communications in the maritime mobile service
- The general principles and basic features
- System overview of the GMDSS structure
- Search and Rescue (SAR)
- Maritime Safety Information (MSI)
- Practical knowledge of radio equipment
- VHF radio installation
- Selective Calling (DSC)
- Antennas, interfacing and power sources
- Procedures and practical operation of the sub-systems
- DSC Distress, urgency and safety communication procedures
- Protection of distress frequencies
- Alerting, Communication and Locating Signals
- Radio telephony procedures
- Ability to exchange communications relevant to the safety of life at sea
- Practical and theoretical knowledge of radio communication procedures
- Regulations for VHF Communications
- Regulations, obligatory procedures and practices
