Vessel Safety Management System

Safety Management System (SMS)

SSTG has been providing access to their Safety Management Systems (SMS) to fishing vessels who participate in our annual auditing scheme since 2013. SSTG has identified the need to structure compliance onboard fishing vessels and their SMS stems from their staff members’ years of experience gained while working at sea.

Fishing Safety Management Code (FSM)

At present, there are no mandated frameworks in place to direct the implementation of a structured Safety Management System (SMS) for fishing vessels.

Over the years, SSTG has diligently adhered to industry best practices, incorporating guidance from various sources such as Parts A and B of the IMO guide, Tormelinos, Merchant Shipping Acts, and even drawing insights from the International Safety Management Code (ISM), which primarily pertains to the Merchant Shipping industry and outlines a comprehensive 12-pillar guide for an SMS framework for Merchant ships…

SSTG implementation of a Vessel Safety Management System.

In 2022, several nations collaborated within the FISH Platform to introduce the Fishing Safety Management Code (FSM). This code is specifically tailored to address the unique needs of fishing vessels, providing a structured framework for effectively managing their operations also under a 12-pillar guide. The Objective of the FSM is to give the owner a structured guide to ensure legal compliance with the legislation as provided by your Flagstate.

Objectives of the Safety Management System

The objectives of the System are to ensure health, safety, and welfare at sea, prevention of human injury or loss of life, and avoidance of damage to the environment, in particular, to the marine environment, and property.

Our safety and management system will ensure:

  1. compliance with mandatory rules and regulations;
  2. that risks on board the vessels are assessed and addressed effectively.
