Sustainable Fuel Awareness
Course Description: This course is designed for seafarers who have completed their STCW basic training or seafarers generally interested in a specialised introduction module on Green and Alternative Marine Fuels such as Ammonia, Methanol, Hydrogen, LNG, LPG and more.
Learn about energy efficiency in support of IMO’s GHG reduction goals as we break these modules into easy-to-understand categories of Fire Prevention, First Aid and Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities which include safety measures needed when working with these fuels.

Learning Objectives: By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the impact of maritime operations on climate change and the role of the shipping industry in global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
- Identify key international regulations and frameworks related to maritime environmental compliance, including the IMO GHG Strategy, MARPOL Annex VI, SEEMP, EEDI, and CII.
- Describe the principles and purpose of Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plans (SEEMP) and how they support operational and technical efficiency.
- Recognize the characteristics, benefits, and safety considerations of emerging alternative fuels such as LNG, methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen.
- Apply basic onboard practices to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency, including voyage planning, engine optimization, and fuel monitoring.
- Demonstrate awareness of the risks and safety protocols involved in handling sustainable and alternative marine fuels.
- Promote a culture of environmental responsibility onboard by aligning personal conduct and operational decisions with global sustainability goals.
- Apply Fire Fighting and First Aid measures involving these fuels.
